5 in 5 with 5 clean sheets

5 in 5 with 5 clean sheets = Glebe go in to the next double header knowing two wins sees them hit the Div 1 finals.

The Glebe gorillas squad was missing Gav McColl along with Conor Dunne so the team shaped up exactly the same as last week with the only difference being Stuart Hanway slotted in to central defence and the bench welcomed the long awaited Anders Limpar who is not fit and available for the rest of the season.

With Leichardt 3rd in the division it promised to be a close game for the Gorillas but in fairness with the gorillas defence and goalkeeper in such good form it makes you wonder if they will leek anymore goals in the remaining regular season games.

Before the match Glebe needed results to go there way with the hope of Liverpool slipping up to ensure that if Glebe win all of their games they will make the Div 1 finals. The team looked at the remaining matches and figured that they would have more of a chance of catching Leichardt than Liverpool as their goal difference is a lot closer.

The game started with both teams playing a pretty rushed style of football the pitch didn’t help all that much and both teams played a direct style of football which was pretty poor on the eye. The Gorillas tried to get the ball down and play but far too often the ball was lost by unnecessary dribbling or hopeful balls in to the oppositions half. The defence of the gorillas looked really solid and big credit must go in the direction of Stuart Hanway who has been out for a large part of the season due to injuries. Stuart played alongside the ever solid Padraig in the middle of defence whilst really not look out of position at all and was a contender for man of the match with his ferocious tackling style and his dominance in the air.

Jamie ‘Neville Southall’ has been the talk of the town recently 5 clean sheets on the spin is truly a great effort! The first goal came from the most unlikely sources imaginable. Jamie took a big kick up the field which bounced over the defender then over the goalkeeper to start the scoring off for the Gorillas 1-0 clean sheet and a goal MOM surely!!!

At half time the instructions were more of the same get the ball down and stop forcing it so much in the final third. The second half was a bit better but Glebe continued to play most of the football. After it looking like Adam was brought down for a penalty the referee ended up giving a direct free kick from the edge of the box. From the resulting free kick Ryu faked a shot with his left foot for Johnny Evans to finish with his right foot with a smart finish in the bottom corner 2-0 Glebe.

It was this goal that put the game to bed Leichardt didn’t look as if they had anything in them after this and conceded a third goal from a great finish from the returning Robert (Limpar) Anderson.

So Glebe won the game in a pretty routine manner without playing their best football all year – next week they have two games Bondi on the Saturday and Golden Stars on the Sunday if Glebe gain maximum points then they will automatically qualify for the division 1 finals the following week.

The squad is looking very strong at the moment we have Robert Andersson to put pressure on the attacking players in the squad and now Stuart Hanway putting pressure on all defensive players add to that Graeme and Conor Dunne to come back Glebe are looking like serious contenders for the title.

All players will want to avoid getting any yellow cards in the coming weeks as suspensions could be critical for finals footy – Glebe will also want to avoid any injuries these next two fixtures.
